Floridian Folk Dancing

The Woody's River Roo Dancers

Two weeks ago, I visited my parents’ house just outside Tampa for a week of sun, seafood, and much-needed decompression. One night they proposed we grab a few drinks at one of their favorite waterfront bars, an establishment named Woody’s River Roo. It was a complete dive but a fun one, replete with live music, courtesy of the female duo Taylor & Taylor. (Judging from the enthusiastic reception, they’re regional celebrities.) Soon enough, the locals couldn’t resist performing some variation of the Electric Slide. And here I thought I wouldn’t be seeing any dancing for a week!

I immediately e-mailed this photo to dance-loving friend familiar with the nearby Sarasota Ballet and asked whether this was that ensemble hard at work. “Yes,” he replied, “note the interesting Floridian style in Ashton choreography.” (I kid, of course: I’ve heard the Sarasota Ballet is well worth seeing.)
