I watch dozens of dance videos on YouTube daily, and to make use of my ceaseless browsing I’ve decided to start sharing a clip here each week.
To kick off the series, here’s Groovie Movie, a 1944 film produced by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer that teaches everything you need to know about the jitterbug in just under 10 minutes. Narrated comically by “a Smith named Pete,” the video delves into swing dance’s history — the steps are pulled from ballet, the waltz, and traditional Japanese forms — and ends with a raucous demonstration by both adults and children. Get a load of these cats!
Oh my god!
Fascinating, entertaining and just a little vaguely disturbing (the Japanese demonstration and the punching the female partner’s head?).
Great find! I loved the humor and it actually made me want to try the jitterbug. Plus, the breakdown of the influences for the steps was really interesting.
